Cold Brew is Heating Up

By Schiff's Food Service

There’s a cold trend in coffee that’s heating up sales. Cold brew coffee sales jumped to over $38 million in 2017, up 137% from 2016 and 370% from 2015.

While cold brew sales are only a small part of the total coffee sales, some analysts believe cold brew sales will continue to take off. Cold brew’s reach has gone beyond the coffee house. It’s popping up in restaurants and grocery stores, particularly places that also that sell craft beer.

The Millennial demand for cold brew no doubt has something to do with its rise in sales. As this generation continues to increase its buying power, it is likely we will see more and more options incorporating cold brew. From cold brew milkshakes to cold brew cocktails, this trend is here to stay.

What makes cold brew different from regular iced coffee? Cold brew is brewed with room temperature or cold water for a 12-24 hour period. Since the coffee is never heated, the acids and oils that can give both hot and iced coffee a bitter taste are never released. This leaves cold brew with a smooth flavor.

Cold brew doesn’t just have to be a glass with ice and a splash of milk. It’s an opportunity to get creative! Here’s a few fun recipes to try:
