Dean Snyder, Celebrating 45 Years

  1. What year did you start working here and what was your initial role?

I started at Schiff’s Restaurant Service in 1979, stocking shelves in the store while I attended Penn State Worthington.

  1. How has your role evolved over the years?

After a year, or so, I became very bored at doing the same thing day after day, so I asked for different positions. Over the years I was trained on the registers, in the warehouse, certain parts of the meat room, taking orders in the office, picking orders for customers, and I was trained at the Beverage Center, too. When I moved to the warehouse position full time, I was also trained at driving the trucks because we had off premise storage and we had to receive and move the products back and forth between locations. That skill also evolved into delivering to the customers. When Schiff’s Food Service came to be, I took the Warehouse Supervisor position at the new location. After we moved to our current location, the Purchasing position became available, and I applied for it. I have not been bored since the early 90’s.

  1. Can you share a memorable moment or milestone from your early days with SFS?

I used to enjoy playing softball for the Cash & Carry (forty years ago when they had a team).

  1. What do you enjoy most about working here?

Definitely the people.

  1. How has the company changed since you started?

The company has evolved with the times, but the industry itself has undergone tremendous changes throughout my career. Management has always kept us on pace with these changes.

  1. What advice would you give new employees just starting their journey?

Ask questions and learn from your mistakes. You can never ask too many questions. That is how you learn. You are bound to make mistakes. Keep them to a minimum by asking questions, and when they happen, make sure you learn from the experience, so you don’t repeat it.

  1. What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of work?

I enjoy wood working.
