Love is in the Air…and on the Menu!

It’s almost here! The time of the year when love is in the air and hopefully your kitchens are very busy. Valentine’s Day is the most popular holiday of the year to dine out, second only to Mother’s Day. It is estimated couples will spend an average of $3.5 billion dollars on a romantic evening with their partners. In addition, it is becoming more popular for the younger audience to take over the dining rooms than older adults. Most choose their partner’s favorite restaurant, while others are inclined to pick restaurants running Valentine’s Day promotions or special menus.

 

While 35% of women are confident in saying they know they want to dine out for Valentine’s Day, 82% are a bit more vague in saying they would just prefer a romantic “experience”. So what does that mean for restaurant owners? It means that creativity and offering more than half priced appetizers is becoming increasingly necessary to get customers in the door. Consider running unique drink and dessert specials, menus that offer opportunities for sharing or multi course options. Many restaurants are turning to events like “paint nights” or other ways to be interactive to make their consumers’ trip to their restaurant about more than just eating- it becomes that experience the couple is looking for.
